The British Society for Cardiovascular Research

BERNARD AND JOAN MARSHALL RESEARCH PRIZES

Nominations Sought

The Bernard and Joan Marshall Research Prizes are awarded annually for outstanding research by young scientists. The prizes are supported by an endowment to the Society by the late Bernard and Joan Marshall.

The Prizes

The prizes are intended to reward excellence in research in any area of cardiovascular biology or medicine. There are two prizes:
  • The Bernard and Joan Marshall Young Investigator Prize (£2500)
  • The Bernard and Joan Marshall Research Excellence Prize (£4000)
  • Previous award winners
Prizes, together with commemorative plaques, will be presented during the BSCR Autumn Meeting dinner.

Eligibility

There are no citizenship restrictions and applications are welcome from academia and the pharmaceutical industry. Applicants must be members of the BSCR (you can apply for membership online). Previous winners of Marshall Prizes may not re-apply.

Candidates for the Young Investigator Prize are eligible if they are in training for a higher degree (PhD, DPhil, or MD) or received their higher degree no more than 3 years before May 31st of the year the prize is awarded. For the 2012 award, they must also have joined the BSCR before December 31st 2011. For subsequent years, they must have joined the BSCR at least one year before May 31st of the award year.

The Research Excellence Prize is for more established investigators, and candidates are eligible if they received their higher degree no more than 10 years before May 31st of the year the prize is awarded. They must also have joined the BSCR at least 3 years before May 31st of the award year.

Payment of each prize is contingent on the winner presenting a talk at that year's BSCR Autumn Meeting and submitting a short article describing their research interests and their award-winning work (of between 1500 and 3000 words) for publication in the BSCR Bulletin. Please note that the BSCR does not pay for travel expenses incurred in attending the meeting.

Application

Please submit by email attachment to the Chair of the BSCR (Yvonne Alexander) the following four items:
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Covering letter justifying the application, including a summary of research achievements (max. 1500 words for the Young Investigator Prize, max. 3000 words for the Research Excellence Prize).
  • A full manuscript that is in preparation, or submitted, or is a PDF of a paper published after May 31st of the year prior to the award year, relevant to the application.
  • A supporting letter from the research supervisor or Head of Department (as applicable) that briefly summarises the applicant's contribution to the research described.
It is expected that the applicants will have taken a major role in the work, and will be either first or senior author of the paper submitted for review.

The deadline for submission is May 31st of the award year.

Please note that any unpublished material presented will be treated with the strictest confidence, and that the material, whether unpublished or not, will not be published by the British Society for Cardiovascular Research, meaning that no copyright issues should arise as a consequence of entering the competition.

Judging and Announcement of Winners

For the Young Investigator Prize, the Committee of the Society will select the best three applications during June each year. The selected applicants will be asked to make short competitive presentations at the BSCR Autumn Meeting and the winner will be selected by a judging panel.

For the Research Excellence Prize, the Committee of the Society will select the winner during June each year, and the winners will be contacted at the beginning of July in good time for them to make arrangements to attend the BSCR Autumn Meeting.
