CHRISTOPHER JACKSON (BSCR SECRETARY)

Chris Jackson
I spent my early research career working at Rhône Poulenc Rorer, now Aventis, and studied with Dr David Bowyer at the Department of Pathology, University of Cambridge, for my PhD. I investigated the effects of calcium channel blockers on smooth muscle cell proliferation in injured arteries in vivo, and the use of animal models to study disease has been the central theme of my research ever since. I took up a postdoctoral fellowship with Professor Michael Reidy at the University of Washington in Seattle, looking at plasminogen activators and smooth muscle cell migration and proliferation. Lab meetings in Seattle at that time would involve, as well as Michael, Russell Ross, Steve Schwartz, Earl Benditt, Dan Bowen-Pope, Alec Clowes and Elaine Raines. Presenting one's work to such an audience was an interesting experience. After two brief further stints in industry, at Pfizer in Kent and DuPont Merck in Pennsylvania, I joined Professor Gianni Angelini's team at the University of Bristol in 1995. My lab in Bristol is now entirely focussed on our murine plaque rupture model, which is yielding unique insights into plaque destabilisation. Further information can be found here.
